This message is brought to you from a September 22, 2002 posting on an older version of my blog via the WaybackMachine:
Today’s topic is Daucus carota — more commonly known as the carrot. What’s the fascination with the orange stick that you eat? I just want to clear up some of the myths and questions you might have about this little orange-faced edible delight.
There’s a fact about carrots I learned when I was attending Pacific Union College from my Personal Nutrition class. Carrots are mistakenly thought to have Vitamin A in them. However, what they do have is beta-carotene which your body uses to produce Vitamin A.
What I really want to share with you today, though, is thoughts on baby carrots (BCs). They certainly seem to be getting the edge in today’s fast-paced society. Where did these come from? Are they genetically altered carrots?? Are they the rejects sent out in discorn and reborn in their own glory? Well, have no fear. Today I bring you where baby carrots come from.
But can someone tell me why we need these things cut up for us?? They cost exorbitantly more than just buying a regularly pack of plain ol’ carrots (POCs). Sure, they have the outsides removed, but, folks, it’s time to grow up and eat the peel. I guess one argument for BCs that could be used is that you’re “stimulating the economy.” Just buy more of the regular carrots, though, and you’ll equally (if not more greatly) stimulate the economy.
Happy carrot eating!!
